It's only been 17 years...

Post by Essifox »

So here's what's up. I haven't literally been playing Pokémon for 17 years because that's my age, but I have been playing as long as I can remember. My favorite and most sentimental Pokémon since is Ninetales. The problem is I can't think of the perfect name for her! I was hoping others might have suggestions. I'm not to worried about meaning, just if it feels right throwing her poké ball out and saying the name.

I feel kinda bad not giving her uniqueness and giving all but her a nickname. If you have any thoughts about a nickname, thanks!
Spoiler:
Ninetales, Female, Non-shiny

Tessa, personally, I love to mess around with names from old Indian tribes or other languages.

When selecting for animals using Indian tribe languages, I use names given to children based on their totem animal (in your case a fox). Then I would select the gender, in your case girl, and find a name that sounds good (or close to perfect). Sometimes I'll mix or combine two words.

Just as an example, according to my research Sinopa (pronounced: sin-oh-puh) is a Blackfoot Indian name granted to girls (and also a word) meaning "kit fox" or "swift fox". That may be of interest to you, or you may decide you want to spell it weird to make it "yours". Ex: Synopa

Another example would be using the Lakota dictionary:

The word for fire is peta (pronounced pay-duh). Whilst the word for fox is either sungila (pron: so-ngi-la) or tokala (my personal favorite, pronounced: toe-kaw-luh). If we combine the two words, somewhat cheating to make the phrase "fire fox" or "fox of fire", it could be pekala, topeta, petokala, tokapeta, etc. I personally would use Tokala, because I think it's adorable to fit Ninetales, yet strong and swift sounding to justify her nature.

Other variations to consider:
Tokata (combining the ending of peta with the beginning of tokala).
Alakot (Tokala backwards)
Atep (Again, backwards name)

I like to give elvish names, as a LotR fan :D *grabs dictionary*
I'm not good with grammar, so I just combine the names how I think they sound good

fang --> atsa I like that as a name alone <3
swift --> Tyelca again the name alone is beautiful :D
fiery eyes --> lachend Doesn't sound female, but I like that "lachend" means "with laughter" in German, so you could combine your happy childhood feelings with the fire nature of Ninetiles
Hínilde combination for "child" (hína) and "friend" (nilde)

Some other words with which you can play around:
fire --> nár(e), naur
fiery --> ruina, úruva
fox --> rusco
shiny --> calina (yeah, it's not a shiny... but maybe you get some someday^^)
golden shiny --> laurea
child --> hína, onna, hên
friend --> nilde (f), meldis (f)

Junior Tycon, Yasha, I love these!!

Junior Tycon, I never thought about doing Indian tribe names before. I might start doing this.

One more thing... Mew? I want to nickname my whole team. I could never think one for Mew either. Mew itself is pretty cute name. I just think a nickname will make MY Mew a little more unique. Ya know?

Ninetales - Tokala(maybe. I really like it!)
Gengar - Charlie (Charlie Charlie game)
Charizard - Odahviing (Skyrim)
Mew - Mew

Rest of my team usually gets switched up.

again Elvish suggestions:

time honoured - Yalúmea or Yárea (you know, because Mew is pretty old^^)
laughter - Lalaith
cloud - Fanya

I have not much time right now, maybe I make other suggestions later :)

Elvish is pronounced pretty much like german or latin ;D

Yalúmea --> Jalumea
Yárea --> Jarea

Use Google translate if you have problems with it! Just enter "Jalumea" or "Jarea" in the left description field, set the language left and right to "German" and klick the "Listen" button ;D

[EDIT]
I just remembered that some people like to pronounce the "r" more japanese, you know this sound somewhere between a "r" and a "l"?
